"Airstream: Traveling
in Style"
Wally Byam graduated from Standford
Law school but
never practiced law. Instead, he began
building trailers from kits, modifying and improving them for friends and
customers. It was his dream to build a trailer that would move like a
stream of air and "to place the great wide world at your doorstep for
you who yearn to travel with all the comforts of home." In 1936,
the Airstream company was launched
when it introduced the "Clipper" travel
trailer.
Today, the signature 'silver
bullet' aluminum travel trailers are as popular as ever and sixty
percent of all of the airstreams ever built are still on the road. Airstream
trailers have always incorporated the latest and most innovative
styles and features. The interiors have been designed by the likes
of Ralph Lauren and Christopher Deem. The trailers have been shown at
the Museum of Modern Art and the San Francisco
Museum of Modern Art.
Perhaps Airstream's most creative
innovation was in creating and tirelessly promoting the travel trailer
lifestyle. From the company's earliest days, Wally Byam encouraged his
customers to use their Airstreams to "see more, do more, live
more." Byam personally led Airstreamers on caravans around the
world from Capetown to Cairo, Southeast Asiaand central America during the late
fifties and sixties. These were arduous, even dangerous trips that
dispel the stereotype of Airstreamers as genteel retirees.
Today, the Airstream trailers and the
travel trailer lifestyle is as popular as ever. Vintage Airstreams are
in demand and a whole new generation is discovering what Wally Byam espoused
seventy years ago. "Airstream: Traveling in Style"
looks at the history of the Airstream company and the travel trailer
lifestyle through interviews with owners, company officials and fascinating
archival footage. In production.
